The much anticipated and super expensive Bollywood film, “Padmavati”, an Indian epic period drama based on the royal Mathur family of India, has caused enough uproar to even get the attention of India’s Prime Minster Narendra Modi.
Starring in the title role as Rani (Queen) Padmavati is of the hottest and most bankable Bollywood superstar Deepika Padukone (yes, THAT Deepika who starred opposite Hollywood actor Vin Diesel in the early 2017 hit film “xXx: Return of Xander Cage) along with the two of the top A list actors Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, both acclaimed award-winning stars.
The film, directed by the acclaimed Sanjay Leela Bhansali, whose films have garnished massive global appeal and are traditionally box office hits, has received political threats, massive backlash on social media and protests across India due to what some critics and the Royal family are saying is the “non-factual” content in the film that has angered supporters, friends and politicians close to the royal family.
The critics claim that director Bhansali dramatized and “embellished” some facts in the film while hurting the sentiments of the royal family and Karni Rajput Sena cast from which the family resides from.
Some aspects of the film show that the controversy is fabricated but again, it’s a Bollywood film and that is expected. It’s not a docudrama or a series based on “actual facts”. At the end of the day, it is a Bollywood film filled with dances, drama, romance and adventure.
