When you think of Australian singer, actress and activist Dame Olivia Newton John what comes to mind is her powerful songs, immense grace and charm, beauty, intelligence and of course her iconic role as Sandy Olsson in the 1978 super hit film “Grease” dancing and singing to her world famous song “You’re The One That I want” with co-star John Travolta.
Some people are just never forgotten and Newton-John will be one of them.
The world lost a tremendous legend on August 8 and the avalanche of tributes for the superstar on social media from celebrities, fans, friends and colleagues from all over the world have been pouring in and will be for a while. Newton-John was loved by millions.
Newton-John was battling breast cancer for over three decades and did so with grace, confidence and hope. She was 73.
Like millions of fans around the world, I first got introduced to the gifted singer from her immensely popular signature 1978 film “Grease” in which Newton-John dances and sings her way into the hearts of millions with co-star Hollywood top actor and good friend John Travolta. The musical film created a cult following with women around the world copying Newton-John’s hairstyle, dance moves and fashion. “Grease” was full of great songs, dance moves and drama and the one song that both Newton-John and Travolta sang and danced to was “You’re The One That I want” which stood out as an instant international hit when the movie was released.
That song til this day, has a massive following, is considered a classic and is watched by millions of fans around the world. Featuring Newton-John’s famous tight black pants and skyscraper big hair along with Travolta’s slim body, slicked back thick hair and gyrating hips, that song became part of popular American culture and a piece of film history and classic movie fashion. “Grease” took both Newton-John and Travolta to a level of stardom that turned them into global stars.
In honor of Newton-John, AMC theaters will feature a special screening of “Grease” in 135 selected theaters across the US over the weekend of August 20th. Tickets will be only $5 and AMC will donate part of the proceeds through the AMC Cares Charitable Trust towards breast cancer research. How much do we love AMC? Thank you CEO Adam Aron!
Another song gaining traction since the departure of Newton-John is her 2012 holiday song with Travolta entitled “I Think You Might Like It” which has received over 10M views on YouTube so far and is still one of the most popular holiday songs to date during the festive season.
Although the superstar has transitioned at 73, her legacy of entertaining the world will go on forever and every time her song or films are being played or shown, you know Olivia Newton-John is smiling from above thinking “Damn, I did a lot of good things!”
The journey continues and for Dame Olivia Newton-John, it’s a new and peaceful one.
