Bollywood Actor Sushant Singh Rajput Had So Much To Live For

Permalink 0

The shocking news of A list Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s demise on June 14 in Mumbai at the age of 34 not only shocked Bollywood but also India.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi even tweeted about the actor’s sudden passing to his almost 60 million followers:

According to media reports in India, the cause of death was suicide by hanging.

What sent shock waves to the Indian film industry and to Rajput’s friends and family (his retired father fainted when he heard the news) is that no one knew of any severe problems or mental health issues the actor was facing or dealing with. However, media reports in India have been reporting that the popular actor (Rajput had over 13 million Instagram followers and over 2 million on Twitter) was suffering from depression, but that has yet to be 100% confirmed. There is also strong speculation that Rajput was dealing with issues from a break up of his girlfriend of 6 years, Ankita Lokhande, also an actress in Bollywood films.

In addition to being a top Indian actor, Rajput was also gaining fast recognition as an international model and worked with iconic and global fashion photographer extraordinaire Mario Testino who photographed Rajput along with American model Kendall Jenner (yes, THAT Kendall) for Vogue India. in 2017.

My media connections in Mumbai were shocked at the news and believe there will be many ongoing investigations regarding Rajput’s sudden death in the coming weeks.

“I still cannot believe Sushant committed suicide. His last few films did well at the box office and financially, he seemed like he had hit the A list status,” said one media contact in Mumbai who is working on a lengthy feature article on the actor for a magazine in Mumbai.

Some Bollywood critics say that Rajput was considered an “outsider” when he entered Bollywood almost 14 years ago, because he did not come from a family of film connections nor did he grow up in Bollywood. He rose the ranks of stardom by starting out as a unknown background dancer in stage shows then moved to television and became instantly popular playing the lead actor in the Hindi language TV drama “Pavitra Rishta” from 2009 to 2011 on Zee TV.

But the actor wanted more and within two years of being on a hit series, decided to try his luck in Bollywood films which paved his way to stardom.

Some of Rajput’s noteworthy movies include Kai Poe Che,(2013), PK (2014), Raabta (2017),Kedarnath (2018) and most recently Chhichhore (2019) which all did extremely well at the box office. The actor’s most famous film that made him a superstar over night was the 2019 biographical film on India’s top cricket star, M.S. Dhoni which caught the attention of Bollywood and top directors. Rajput’s last completed film entitled Dil Bechara (2020) was supposed to be released in early May but due to COVID19 and Mumbai’s lockdown, the film’s release got delayed until the summer.

But despite fame and fortune, some Bollywood insiders say that the driven and multi-talented actor did not receive his well-deserved recognition from his Bollywood peers or bestowed any major entertainment industry awards for his films which critics believed he rightfully earned.

“I really don’t know why Sushant didn’t get the kind of recognition that he so deserved with his films,” said one leading Mumbai based entertainment journalist who is writing a book on Bollywood. “When you come from the outside so to speak of Bollywood, it’s even tougher to make it because you don’t get multiple chances or opportunities like many of the star kids get. Sushant had to prove himself over and over again in Bollywood which can lead to a great deal of frustration and self-doubt.”

There were many things about the star which his fans were unaware of. Rajput was an avid reader who read books on everything from philosophy to religion. He studied Mechanical Engineering in college and loved to travel the world meeting people from different cultures. He also lived and breathed fitness and maintained a healthy lifestyle which including devoted gym workouts and eating organically grown foods.

With ongoing investigations from the Mumbai police regarding Rajput’s death (the actor left no suicide note) continue to haunt his family and close friends, people in Bollywood are hoping answers will come soon so that the actor’s family will have time to heal and grieve in private.

But no matter who’s to blame or what led the award-winning young actor to suddenly end his life, it will be forever be traumatic to his millions of fans around the world when they have to now refer to the Indian film star as the late Sushant Singh Rajput.

The journey continues…but for Sushant Singh Rajput, it ended way too early.
