The recent 77th Golden Globes had some interesting speeches, surprise wins and plenty of after show gossip that kept the morning talk shows pretty busy. But despite the politicized speeches and lackluster ratings, the Hollywood awards show is still regarded as one of the most anticipated shows to kick-off the awards show season where celebrities, social media influencers and global media outlets look forward to attending and writing about.
Highlights of this year’s winners include the World War epic film “1917” which won for Best Drama Motion Picture and Best Director for Sam Mendes. Actor Brad Pitt won for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for “One Upon A Time in Hollywood”. The film also won for Best Comedy Motion Picture and Best Screenplay and is considered to be one of director Quentin Tarantino’s finest films. I saw it twice and personally highly recommend it.
The Golden Globes stage has also become over the years, a platform for concerned celebrities and Hollywood elite who like to voice their concerns regarding ongoing current global and political issues which effect the world. This year, climate change, the Australia fires, immigration, the ongoing conflict with Iran and abortion rights took front and center during the winners acceptance speeches.
Superstar Joaquin Phoenix, who won for his astonishing performance in the film “Joker” spoke passionately about climate change during his acceptance speech. Versatile actress and activist Patricia Arquette, who won for Hulu’s “The Act” expressed her concern over a potential war with Iran and the importance of voting in 2020. Actress Michelle Williams spoke about reproductive rights.
Beloved actor and devoted family man Tom Hanks received the prestigious Cecil B. deMille award and in an emotional acceptance speech, thanked his amazing family for their life long support. Hanks has received 8 Golden Globes for his work in films and TV and was nominated his year for Best Supporting Actor for his role as iconic TV family man Fred Rogers in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.”
The prestigious Carol Burnett Award went to beloved talk show host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres for outstanding contributions to television on or off the screen. So well deserved!
Presented by the well-respected and highly regarded Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globes was hosted this year by award-winning comedian Ricky Gervais (his 5th time) who graced the show with his ever so raw humor (“when you win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech, right?).
Even after 77 years of ongoing award giving, The Golden Globes is still one of the most talked about shows and often (but not always) gives a bit of a hint as to which star could potentially be in the running to win an Oscar. The much anticipated Academy Awards will be televised live from Los Angeles on Feb. 9.
And one must not forget the elegant fashions of the glam show. Actresses and actors want to look their best as their wardrobe and million dollar accessories will be talked about & photographed for millions to see around the world and appear in every single media outlet. With a global audience of millions, the stars want to look close to perfection as they can and with a team of highly paid dedicated staff , it will almost be impossible not to.
